Despite many casino players thinking that craps is a complicated table game, we are here to dispel that belief. Yes, there may be lots of different bet types, such as odds bets, come-out roll, lay odds, snake eyes and betting on the pass line, it’s not as complicated as it initially seems.
How to Play Craps Online
This is often a casino game that intimidates new players because there are so many different bets and bet types you need to know about. Many people are also put off by complicated looking tables. Only looking at these might prove to be off-putting. However, once you know what you’re doing, it really is simple. Simply read our beginners guide and practice on free craps games and you will be an expert in no time. However, make sure you read the guide carefully, and have it to hand so you always feel ready and confident to play. Remember, if you are completely new to online craps you need to pay attention to every single one of the different elements that comprise a craps game. So, first, you need to learn about the game of craps, then you need to practice the game and then you will be ready to hit the craps table for real money.
The Three Main Craps Rules
The reason it is so easy to learn how to play craps is that there are only really three main rules you need to know about. So learning the game takes next to no time.
The game of craps all begins with a come-out roll. A come-out roll is the first roll of the dice of the craps game or it is the first roll of dice after the last betting round. This is performed by ‘The Shooter’, which is the name given to the player who throws the dice.
So, to start the game ‘the shooter’ will take the dice and throw them on the craps table (at a land-based casino). For online casino craps games, the shooter would simply press the ‘roll’ button.
As soon as the dice are rolled and the number has come up on your screen, then three outcomes could occur:
Natural
This is the outcome of the dice game that you want. This means that you either roll a 7 or 11. Should you happen to roll a 7 or 11 then you win and you can have another roll of the dice.
Craps
Now, this is what you don’t want to happen. This is where you roll a double one – 2 (also known as a snake-eyes), a 3 or 12. Should you throw a 2, 3 or 12 then you lose. However, the round won’t be over and you will get to roll again and try to roll a 7!
Point Number
A point is where a player rolls 4,5,6,8 9, 10. If you were to be playing craps at a land-based casino in Las Vegas, then the dealer would mark your rolled point number on the craps table. However, on a game of online craps, a small button will appear as soon as the ‘point’ number is established. The button is small, white and says ‘On’.
Once this happens, then you will need to roll the dice again and try to get the same number again. It doesn’t have to be the same two numbers making up that number though, so if you get an 8 the first time with 6 and 2, you can get 5 and 3 the next time. As long as it adds up to the same number as the first time, whether it’s 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 then you win. However, if the player rolls a 7 on the second throw then it is not lucky number 7 this time. If a player rolls a seven then they ‘seven out’ and this means that they lose and it’s the end of that betting round.
This is the first part of craps that you need to know. As soon as you understand the basics then you can start looking at the different betting options available. Once you start knowing about the betting options it starts to become much more fun because that is the main point of the game – to place bets and win money.
Betting On Online Craps
So, you know how to play craps, you know what outcome you’re wanting but now you want to start placing those winning bets.
Whether you are playing at a craps table online or offline, it looks the same – and there’s a lot more to it than dice and numbers. The table has a number of different areas giving players different betting options.
Pass Bet / Don’t Pass Bet
The first players bet to know about is either betting on ‘pass the line’ or ‘don’t pass the line’.
If you place a bet on ‘Pass the Line’ then you are betting on the shooter winning by rolling a 7 or 11 (natural) or else by winning ‘the point’ before they ‘seven-out’.
As you would expect, a ‘Don’t Pass the Line’ bet is the opposite. You are betting on the player to lose. This will happen if a punter rolls a 2 or 3 or doesn’t roll the point again before they ‘seven out’.
If the shooter rolls a 12 then your bet is now a ‘Push’. This means it is cancelled out and you neither win nor lose your bet. Remember, you can only place a bet before the ‘point’ has been established on the craps table. If the point has already been established and the shooter is looking to get the point again then you can only make a come or don’t come bet.
Come Bets / Don’t Come Bets
These are the bets that you can only make after the point number has already been determined. If you make a ‘Come Bet’ then you will win if the shooter rolls a ‘natural’ but lose if they roll a ‘craps’. However, if the shooter rolls a point then it will become the ‘Come Bet Point’. These work in the same way as a Pass Line bet works. Should the come bet point roll out again before the shooter rolls a 7 then you win. If not, then you lose.
As such, the ‘Don’t Come Bet’ is very much like the ‘Don’t pass bet’. If the shooter happens to roll a 2 or 3 then you win. If they roll a 7 or 11 then you lose. Again, a 12 means your bet is a ‘Push’ bet. So, if the shooter rolls a point, then you want the shooter to roll a 7 before they roll out the point number again.
Pass / Come bets are the same in that they can’t be turned off.
Online Craps Proposition Bets
These are examples of the simple one roll bet types
- Any seven bet – wins if the shooter rolls a 7
- Any craps bet – wins if the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12
- Aces bets – wins if the shooter rolls a 2
- Ace Deuce bets – wins if the shooter rolls a 3
- Boxcars bets – wins if the shooter rolls a 12
- Horn bets – wins if the shooter rolls a 2, 3, 11 or 12
The only exception to the online craps ‘one roll’ bet rule is Hard Ways. Should you make a Hard Ways bet then if you roll a 4, 6, 8 or 10 with the pair of the same numbers before any other combination that makes the same total or you seven-out, then you win this online craps prop bet!
Other Types of Online Craps Bets
- Field Bet – A field bet is only active for a single dice roll. If you roll a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 then you win. Should you roll a 5, 6, 7 or 8 then you lose.
- Place Bets – As soon as the point is determined then you can bet on any number. If they roll this number before rolling a 7 then you win this online craps bet!
- Big 6 and Big 8 Bets – This is where you bet that either a 6 or 8 will be rolled before a seven.
Where You Can Practice Online Craps
So, you know how to play online craps and you know how to bet on craps, but now you need to practice online craps. This is the next very important step you need to think about before playing real money craps. We would always recommend that you practice your game first before playing in a real live casino and risking your own money. Now, there are plenty of online craps betting sites that will give new punters the chance to play the game for free for as long as you feel is necessary.
We would recommend looking at our list of best online craps casinos because all of these will give you the opportunity to practice for free. You could even use the welcome bonus you get on signing up to play online craps, but we would recommend waiting until you know what you’re doing properly before risking any funds – bonus or otherwise. You can play for as long as you like without spending anything at the online craps casino until you feel ready to move into real money craps games.
It is well worth noting that compared to other table games, online craps is pretty much the best game for odds as it has a very generous house edge of around 1.41%. This makes it even better than popular games such as blackjack and roulette when played with a basic strategy.
Once you have practised and feel confident that you understand then you can think about registering for an online craps betting site to play the games for real money. The best craps betting site will offer an excellent welcome bonus to new customers so they can enjoy the game with bonus funds first. However, make sure that before you collect any bonus, read the terms and conditions to make sure you can use the bonus funds playing online craps games.
How We Choose the Best Casinos for Online Craps Games
So, what do we look for when it comes to recommending the best online casinos for craps? Well, first of all, it is vitally important that the craps online casino is safe, secure and fully regulated. If you have got to the point where you want to play online craps for real money, you need to be assured that the site is looking after your financial and personal details. You also want to know that if you win at online craps, the casinos will payout. So, our first priority is always the security and trustworthiness of a site. However, there are a number of other areas we have taken into consideration when recommending the best online craps betting sites:
Welcome Bonus and Bonus Offers
Getting a sign-up bonus when you first register for your new craps casino is always important. Many online casinos offer a match deposit bonus on registration, which means that the casino will match your initial deposit with bonus funds. So, if you claim a first deposit bonus 100% up to €50, then deposit €50, your bonus will be €50. Many have bonus offers that go up to hundreds of dollars and some will also have free spins thrown in for good measure, to use on selected slot machines. However, looking at the terms and conditions attached is very important as the bonus funds may not be valid on the casino craps games. Players may not be able to spend the funds on craps and also game weighting may be different for craps and table games. So, when T&Cs apply that include wagering requirements, you may not be able to fulfil the wagering requirements playing online craps or it may only have a 10% weighting. This means if you have wagering requirements of €2,000, if you play on craps then you would need to wager 10-times as much – €20,000.
Good online casinos for craps will also offer bonuses and promotions for existing customers, which you can use on craps and table games. These could be money back offers especially for live casino and table games, tournaments and more. We also like to see other bonuses like free spins etc, so you can have some variety in your online betting experience if you ever fancy a change from craps!
Odds and House Edge
The best casinos for craps games will offer players a wide variety of games with generous odds and a good house edge. The biggest appeal of the game is how generous the house edge is compared to other games. As such, the best casino will offer a game of craps that has excellent house odds. However, we also like the site to offer a variety of different bet types for a game of craps. Variety is key here, so every casino we recommend will offer come bets, pass bets, one roll bets and give players the chance to win in a variety of ways.
Ease of Use
Registering for the casino and getting to play should be easy and quick for any new players. Signing up should simply require you to enter your email address as well as other details such as name, address phone number and create a password. Then, making a deposit and claiming a bonus should be equally as quick, ideally with a variety of banking options available. Deposits should all be instant with no transaction fees attached and your welcome offer should be credited straight into your account as soon as your qualifying deposit is made.
The site should be laid out in a way that is easy to navigate so you can make your way to your chosen game of craps quickly and then simply start playing. We also rate highly a casino with excellent customer service so you can access help whenever you need it, in case any issues arise.
Mobile App
We live in a time where many more people are now playing at their online casino whilst on the move. As such, all of the online casinos for craps that we recommend offer as many craps games on mobile as they do on desktop. All of the games should also be perfectly optimised for use on the mobile screen. Ideally, the mobile casino site will also be very easy to use and look every bit as attractive as the desktop site.
Many sites also offer mobile casino apps that have an excellent variety of craps games available. This means that you can download the app straight onto your mobile device – iOS or Android, and the games will be there on your phone whenever you want. The benefit of this is that it is much easier to play if your internet connection isn’t so great. However, it does take up space and memory on your mobile device, so you need to take this into consideration. You may also need to regularly update the app when changes are made which can affect the experience.
Craps Online FAQs
Which is the Best Online Casino to Play Craps?
For any players looking to play craps online then there are a number of excellent casinos which offer a variety of craps games. We have compiled a list of all the best craps gaming sites, offering a safe, secure and trustworthy experience with a variety of games, excellent user experience that we would recommend for players new to craps.
Can I Use My Welcome Bonus on Craps?
This very much depends on what T&Cs apply to your chosen casino bonus. Most will allow you to use your deposit match bonus on all casino games, including craps. However, when you look at the wagering requirements attached, it is worth looking at the game weighting requirements as you may have trouble fulfilling the wagering requirements on games such as craps etc. Obviously, if a casino offers new players a bonus of free spins, then this only benefits slot machine players and isn’t worth it for craps players.
What is a Come Out Roll?
The come-out roll is the first roll of the dice in a game or round of betting. So, the shooter that is going first would play the come-out roll.
What is a Pass Line Bet
The pass line bet is the most popular of all craps bets. The pass line bet has a house edge of 1.41% which explains its popularity. It’s also the easiest of the wagers to make. A pass line bet means that players are wagering on a shooter to roll a 7 or 11 before rolling a 2, 3 or 12 on the come-out roll. So, then, if the dice lands on the 7 or 11, then your wager will win. If it lands on 2, 3 or 12 then your bet loses. If it lands on any other number then the pass line bet will stay active until the shooter either rolls a point number again or else a seven.
What is a Don’t Pass Bet?
A don’t pass bet is the reverse of a pass line bet. This means that if the shooter throws a 2 or 3, then the bet will win. If the shooter throws a 7 or 11, then the ‘don’t pass’ bet will lose. However, if the shooter rolls a 12 then the bet is a ‘push’ bet, which means it neither wins nor loses. This has a very low house edge of 1.36% which is appealing, but because you are betting on the players to lose, many often don’t place this kind of a bet.
Is a Come Bet the Same a Pass Bet?
Although they are very similar, there is one major difference. Players can only make a come bet after the point has been determined and after the pass line. However, the rules are the same for a pass line bet. After the initial come-point has been set then any bettor making a come bet wagers is betting on the shooter throwing a 7 or 11.
How is a Don’t Come Bet Different from a Don’t Pass Bet?
Essentially, a don’t come bet is very similar to the same as a don’t pass bet. However, a don’t come bet is made after the point has been set, not before. However, just like the ‘don’t pass bet’, the bettor is wagering on the shooter throwing a 2 or 3. Just like don’t pass bets, if the shooter lands a 12, then it will be a push bet.
What are The Single Roll Bets in Online Craps?
There are a number of single roll bet options when playing craps online. One of these is a Field Bet, where a player wins if they land a 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11. They will win a double payout if a 2 is rolled and a treble win if they roll a 12. However, if the shooter throws a 5, 6, 7 or 8 then the bet loses! This is a bet that has a higher house edge than other online craps bets. Other single roll craps bets include 2 or 12 bets, 3 or 11 bets, any 7 bets and any craps bets. These all have a high house edge but all come with a better win amount.
What is the Best Mobile App for Craps Online?
All of the online casinos that we have recommended in our list of best craps betting sites all offer excellent mobile sites and mobile apps for anyone wanting to play and bet on craps away from their computer screen. They all have excellently optimised mobile apps with a variety of excellent craps games. They are also very easy to use and allow you to access all areas that are available on the desktop site. These mobile sites also offer other options aside from craps, including other table casino games as well as plenty of slots as we believe that variety is the spice of life and it’s good to be able to enjoy games aside from craps every now and then.
Is Playing Craps Online the Same as Playing it in Las Vegas?
Apart from not being there in person (so you don’t need to dress up), the game is exactly the same, and apart from rolling the dice, you simply press Roll. However, the rules are the same.
